Guided Tours
Val Grande National Park is situated between Lago Maggiore and Val d'Ossola, only 100 km from Milan and 150 km from Turin. It is the largest wilderness area in Italy.
It is an environmental and historical heritage to discover slowly, walking with the Park Official Guides and trying to turn a tour into a "discovery journey".

FIFTH EDITION
Val Grande has been inspiring writers, journalists, as well as mountain lovers for over forty years. The evidences gathered and the charm of wild nature are translated into words often completed by ancient images and modern photos. This is how the books helping us to understand, recall, discover, and appreciate were born.

Visit to the Quarry of the Milan Cathedral
Also this year Ente Parco Nazionale Val Grande, in collaboration with Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano and with the Park Official Tour Guides, suggests the visit to Candoglia Mother Quarry, whose top-quality marble has been chosen and used to build the Milan Cathedral.
There is a deep link between the Milan Cathedral and the National Park: the pink marble vein so evident on the Ossola slope crosses the valley outcropping in many points; Val Grande woodlands have provided the precious timber for the transport of the marble blocks and the scaffolding used during the building of the Cathedral.
The tour leaves from Candoglia, in the Municipality of Mergozzo. After a short walk on foot, we will get to the sawmill of Veneranda Fabbrica, a place where still today the huge blocks coming from the Mother Quarry are squared. We will continue our tour on foot to the entrance of the Mother Quarry, a panoramic point over lower Ossola. Back to the departure point, we will visit the restoration workshop where skilled craftsmen faithfully reproduce the parts of the Cathedral damaged by time and pollution.
Friday 16th July and Friday 10th September
Meeting in Candoglia (Mergozzo) at 9.00 a.m.
Tour led by a Park Tour Guide (Valgrande Soc. Coop.) Participation fee: € 8.00
