Presentation of the Itinerary

This Nature Trails unwinds in the territory of the Municipality of Beura, which can also be reached by train via the Milano - Domodossola railway line. The route starts from the town hall in Beura, goes through the built-up area (where you will find wonderful examples of the local architectural style) and then it goes uphill along the paved mule track leading to Bissoggio. Along the route, 11 informative boards describe – with images and short texts – the centuries-old history that has linked the people living in these mountains to the use of stone. Since ancient times, stone has represented the building material par excellence. Roads, mule tracks, toe walls, supports, everyday life tools, country buildings (presses, mills, stables) and even the elegant houses in Beura, everything was built with the local stone, known as “beola”. Today three different varieties of this kind of stone are still being extracted in the territory of Beura, and they are used and valued especially as covering materials.
From Bissoggio it is possible to take a path which goes up to Alpe Pozzolo (for well-trained hikers), where there is an unattended ever-open mountain hut.
